Description

Back by popular demand, our 4 day Summer Bootcamp!

Designed for people who are unable to make our 4 weekends a year, or anyone who would love to combine a visit to the beautiful county of Somerset with some serious glassy fun, we offer 4 days full of exploration in the art of kiln formed glass!

This class is designed to be flexible, to suit the needs of the group… what’s on offer is a chance to pick the brains and talent of Liz Sparkes, a glass maker with over 15 years experience, and (KFGC style,  the brains and talents of your co students!!)  in a fully equipped studio, and to cover at least 4 techniques (although often we have covered more!)

The class is suitable for those with limited experience, as well a those with plenty… (not suitable for absolute beginners, if in doubt, just ask us, but in principle as long as you know how to cut glass, you’ll be fine, even if you’re not very good at it yet!)

Techniques available range from…

  • cold working techniques, including  sandblasting and gilding,
  • innovative slumping,
  • lampshades
  • making your own texture moulds and creating Sun or Moon Bowls.
  • raking, working with enamels and powders to create sea and landscapes,
  • making elements to use in other work (such as wafers, freeze ad fuse and vitro graph stringers) ,
  • creating texture, and multilayered panels.
  • working with metal foils
  • Casting paperweights

And if there’s something specific you REALLY would love to try, just let us know and we’ll see what we can do!

The process of choosing what will be covered is very democratic… around 4 weeks before the course starts you will be sent a questionnaire, asking you to rank the techniques on offer in order of preference.. and from that we select the top 4 rated techniques, also mindful of any “must do”s” too… sounds a bit bonkers but after many years of doing it this way, you can rest assured it works, and everyone goes away happy!

All materials are included in the course fee, and with tea and coffee on tap all day, what’s not to like? (lunch is not provided, however there is a cafe next door, or you are welcome to bring your own lunch and eat in our breakout area or lovely courtyard, weather permitting!)

There are plenty of places to stay close to the studio in all price ranges, just search using the post code TA19 9PS. We advise booking as early as possible, as this course is running during the first week of the school holidays, so places may get booked up closer to the time. Particular favorites with students have been Shave Farm, Donyatt, and the Five Dials Inn. There is also a Travel Lodge within walking distance. Cheaper options may be found on Airbnb. there are also plenty of camp sites close by if you have a van.

If you need to come by public transport, it’s very easy to get to Taunton and we can arrange a lift to the studio from there, just contact us for details.
